Hardwood lumber works with a set of standard industry grades that were established and have been in practice for well over 100 years. These rules are internationally recognized and those within the industry must have a strong understanding of these rules when selling and buying American hardwoods.
However, hardwood logs are different. Logs from North America do not have a nationally or internationally recognized grade standard. This means that depending on who you purchase your logs from you might be getting a slightly different product from provider to provider. So the big question is how does your hardwood log provider classify or categorize the logs they put into each of their grades.
Speaking specifically for Baillie Lumber, we define a veneer log as follows:
- A veneer log must be straight, round, and center hearted. If a hardwood log does not possess all three of these traits, we do not consider it a veneer log.
This is important because veneer logs are logs that can be sliced into .5mm sheets of veneer. To obtain the maximum yield and quality from the log in must have straightness, roundness, and a centered heart.
Of course it is important to recognize that there are often different types of veneer logs. Take Red Oak logs for example. In certain parts of the world Red Oak veneer is stained black so Red Oak logs for manufacturers in those areas can accept some black defects in the wood. In other parts of the world Red Oak veneer logs need to be light and wheat colored to be acceptable. In this case only the highest quality Red Oak from the northeastern part of the United States would be acceptable.
What this means is most hardwood log grades for export are proprietary grades. They are developed for a specific customer and with the customer’s specific log needs in mind. That’s why it is important to work with a hardwood log supplier that knows the industry and has access to a large and plentiful supply of hardwood logs. This way you can be sure to get what you need when and where you need it.
