HIGH PRESSURE LAMINATES (HPL) PRODUCTION PROCESS AND MANUFACTURING DEFECTS

High Pressure Laminates (HPL) are made from specially selected kraft and printed papers impregnated with thermosetting synthetic resins and fused together under heat and high-pressure in a controlled environment to form single high-density sheets of laminates.

All laminate surfaces shall be inspected prior to lamination to ensure they are sound,
clean, and free of surface defects. Protective peel coat should be removed prior to
inspection.

High pressure laminate is manufactured in a flat press by
combining decorative papers saturated in melamine resin with
phenolic-impregnated kraft layers at pressures exceeding the NEMA
specification of 750 psi (5.17 MPa) and temperatures approaching
300˚ F (150˚ C). The panels are trimmed to size and the backs are
sanded to facilitate bonding. The thickness of the laminate is
determined by the number of kraft layers used. The laminating
process combines the durability of melamine resins with the aesthetics
of decorative papers creating a surfacing material that has been the
standard for well over forty years

Packaging and transportation are carried out in accordance with Arpa General Processing Recommendations.

2 – PRODUCTION OF RESINS
Production of thermosetting resins according to Arpa’s recipe. The resins will later be used to impregnate the decorative and kraft papers that create the HPL sheet. They can be phenolic (for the kraft paper substrate) or melaminic (for the decorative paper).

3 – IMPREGNATION
In the HPL production process, the impregnation is the operation of preparation of the kraft and decorative papers. They are first soaked (impregnated) in thermosetting resins, then dried. The paper so prepared will give origin to the HPL sheet during the thermo-lamination process.

4 – IMPREGNATED PAPER STORAGE
The impregnated kraft and decor paper is stored in appropriated and controlled environment rooms.

5 – ASSEMBLY
In the HPL production cycle, the assembly is the act of overlapping the different kraft, decor and overlay sheets.

Then they are ready to be carried in a press for the thermo-lamination.

6 – HIGH PRESSURE LAMINATION
The thermal lamination is the irreversible process which gives origin to the HPL: the impregnated sheets of decorative and kraft paper undergo a simultaneous pressing and heating process at high levels of heat and pressure.

Lamin-Art brand high-pressure decorative laminate is manufactured by laminating phenolic resin-impregnated kraft sheets with melamine resin-impregnated decorative and overlay sheets. The lamination is performed under a minimum pressure of 1,000 psi (2,068 kPa) and at a temperature of approximately 300°F (149°C). The pressed laminate is trimmed to various sizes, and the back is sanded to provide uniform thickness, and to facilitate adhesive bonding.

CAN I ORDER SHEET SIZES OTHER THAN 4’ X 8’ AND 4’ X 10’?

We can produce special sizes on select items in our high-pressure decorative laminate line. Special door sizes (3’ X 7’ and 3’ X 8’ sheets) are available for several of our Premium Wood Prints (some exclusions apply). There is a minimum order of 50 sheets of an identical pattern, 2 week lead time, and a no return policy associated with these custom size orders.In addition, we can also produce 5’ X 12’ sheets on select items. HOW IS PEARLESCENCE MANUFACTURED?

Pearlescence is achieved in two steps: First, special inks that incorporate pearlized particles are used on the printed decorative paper. Second, a reduced amount of melamine is used in the manufacturing process to allow the inks to reflect and refract light for maximum visual impact. Consequently, since the melamine resin gives high-pressure laminate its wear resistance, Pearlescence products do not meet NEMA standards for abrasion/scratch resistance (the NEMA standard is 400 revolutions on a Taber Abrader; Pearlescence products achieve 100-300 cycles). Therefore, we DO NOT recommend specifying Pearlescence laminates for high-wear horizontal applications. If you would like to specify a Pearlescence product for a horizontal application, we suggest specifying it in Textured or Velva-Tex finish with the addition of the Oyster Shield High-Wear Protection option.

DOES THE COLOR OF LAMINATE FADE?

HPL is the short name of  “High Pressure Laminates” . HPL  is a kind of engineered plastic laminates . After the plywood has been produced, HPL is covered onto the face/back of plywood under high pressure . That’s what people call “HPL Plywood” .
HPL plywood is a kind of fire-proof plywood, because it has high temperature resistance and radiant heat resistance in addition to the other characteristics such as wear and impact resistance, water resistance, stain resistance, cleanability, durability and so on .

PACKAGING PLYWOOD FOR SHIPMENT


(Courtesy of Dr. P.D.Evans)Baldwin (1981) suggests the extent of packing needed is closely related to the relative locations of a plywood factory and its main customers. Train boxcars give such good protection that plywood in large lots need scarcely be packaged at all. Of course, movement in the car must be prevented, corners must be protected and soiling especially of the top and bottom sheets must be avoided. Similar condition apply to transport by trucks, provided rain proof tarpaulins are effective. In addition panel edges must be protected against indentation from the hold-down ropes or cable.

Pre-finished plywood requires a much higher degree of protection. It is often shipped in strong paper board containers usually with a sheet of soft paper on each finished surface, such protection is essential for melamine overlaid panels. The paper may be self adherent or replaced by a skin like plastic membrane which is sprayed on and can easily be peeled off later.

For shipment involving much handing, such as sea transport, crating is still the most common form of packaging


 

PACKAGING OF VENEERS FOR SHIPMENT

Packaging of veneer is basically similar to that of panels, although the quality of protecting may have to increase with the value of the contents. Rotary cut veneers often pose problems of bulking up because sheets can be wavy and distorted. They then have to be compressed to give a compact package.
