Under the new normal conditions, the development of wood-based panel industry in China is no longer a matter of speed, but how to improve product quality, adjust structure, transformation and upgrading. With the improvement of economic strength, the contribution of wood-based panel enterprises in promoting economic growth and comprehensive utilization of timber has been recognized by the society. However, the problems of imperfect governance structure, inadequate investment in R&D, poor innovation ability, large flow of talents, backward management concept and irregular operation mode of some private enterprises restrict their sustainable development ability and make it difficult to develop. To grow, it is urgent for enterprises to practice hard their internal skills, strengthen investment in brand building, cleaner production and social responsibility, and achieve comprehensive innovation and upgrading.
The overall innovation ability needs to be improved. Wood-based panel industry belongs to the general competitive industry. At present, China’s wood-based panel industry is still at the bottom of the “smile curve”. There are insufficient investment in R&D and limited innovation ability. A considerable number of enterprises have been at the low end of the industrial chain. Especially, small and medium-sized private enterprises producing plywood rely on low-cost expansion, low-level imitation, low-level processing for a long time to maintain their livelihoods and lack of nuclear. Heart competitiveness and self-owned brand need to be highly valued.
Costs are rising steadily. China’s veneer wood-based panel industry concentration is very low, most of them are small and medium-sized enterprises, private enterprises account for more than 90% of all enterprises. Influenced by such factors as the decline of the labor force, the shortage of the age-appropriate labor force and the increase of the minimum wage standard year by year, the enterprise employment cost has risen year by year and the benefit has obviously declined, which has become an important factor hindering the innovation and development of wood-based panel enterprises. On the other hand, wood-based panels are restricted by limited forest resources. Because of the large proportion of middle and young forest areas, the structure of tree species is unreasonable, the self-sufficiency is poor in the short term, and the dependence on wood imports is more than 55%. The shortage of raw materials is the main restrictive factor for the further rapid development of wood-based panel industry in China.
