Development of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)

Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is a kind of wood structure material which is made of thick veneer with rotary cutting and glued by sizing, compacting along grain and pressing. Different from plywood, laminated veneers of veneer laminates are all lined billets, so they are also called parallel plywood. The number of laminated layers can reach more than ten layers. Its production process is similar to that of plywood. Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is very popular because of its relatively free strength design and low anisotropy.

Veneer laminated wood (LVL) was developed in the United States in the 1960s. At that time, the United States was in a period of rapid economic development, housing construction from the 1950s also began to enter the climax, so the demand for wood is very large, and the crisis of forest resources became the main problem at that time, the price of large-diameter fine wood of Citigroup Pine in the northwest of the United States increased significantly. In addition, in the late 1960s, the natural conservation movement was booming, so people must strive to improve the level of wood utilization. In addition, at that time, the United States also developed many advanced technologies represented by space technology. The isopropylbenzene method proposed by the petrochemical industry reduced the cost of carbonic acid resin adhesives, which also stimulated the development and production of veneer laminates to a certain extent. At present, veneer laminated wood has been widely used in the world.

PSL (Parallel Strand Lumber), a new type of wood structural material similar to veneer laminated wood, is made by Macmillan Co., Ltd. of Canada. After 20 years of unremitting efforts, the product and production process have been patented in many countries in the world. Since 1985, it has been used in buildings in North America, and its scope of application has gradually expanded.
