5.6.1. – Marine grades shall meet the requirements
of Exterior plywood and shall be of one of the
following grades: A-A, A-B, B-B, HDO, MDO, all as
modified in 5.6.1.1 through 5.6.1.3.

5.6.1.1. Species – Only Douglas-Fir and Western
Larch veneers shall be used
Only Red Meranti (Shorea or Keruing ) veneers
shall be used.
Only Red Meranti (Shorea or Keruing) veneers
are to be used for Hydrotek. Only Okoume
veneers are to be used in Joubert Okoume.
5.6.1.2. Veneers – Grade A faces shall be limited to
a total of nine repairs in a 1220mm by 2440mm
(4×8 sheet), or to a proportionate number in any
other size as manufactured. All inner plies shall be
B grade or better and shall be full length and width.
All wood repairs shall be glued with an adhesive
meeting the exterior performance requirements of
5.7.4 and, in addition, shall be set ni the panel
using a technique involving both heat and pressure.
When the inner plies consist of two or more species
of veneer, the edges shall be straight and square,
and shall not overlap.
Veneers – Grade A faces shall be limited to a total
of five per 1220mm by 2440mm (4×8 sheet), or to
a proportionate number in any other size as
manufactured. Face veneers shall be at least
1mm thick after sanding, and panel must be multiply
construction. No wood repairs are used in the
face. When the inner ply’s consist of two or more
species of veneer, the edges shall be straight and
square, and shall not overlap. Joints shall not be
longer than 600mm in length.
Veneers – Grade A faces shall not have any
repairs or defects on the faces, and shall allow
no more than two repairs on the back veneer of a
1220mm x 2440mm (4×8) sheet, or to a
proportionate number in any other size as
manufactured. Face veneers shall be at least
1mm thick after sanding, and panel must be
multi-ply construction. No wood repairs are used
in the face. The inner ply’s are to be the same
specie veneer as used on the face and back.
5.6.1.3 Crossband gaps and edge splits – Neither
edge of a panel shall have any crossband gap or
edge split in excess of 3.2mm wide. Crossband
gaps and edge splits of 2440mm of a crossband ply
shall not exceed four in number. End splits and
gaps on either end of a panel shall not exceed
3.2mm in aggregate width. There shall be no filling
of crossband gaps and edge splits.
Crossband gaps end edge splits – Neither edge of
a panel shall have any crossband gap or edge
split in excess of 3.2mm wide. Crossband gaps
and edge splits shall not exceed 12% of the panel
in both width and length measurements. End
splits and gaps on either end of a panel shall not
exceed 3.2mm in aggregate width. Gaps shall be
putty filled to protect from moisture.
Crossband gaps and edge splits – Neither edge
of a panel shall have any crossband gap or edge
split in excess of 1.0mm wide. Cross band gaps
and edge splits of 1mm that may be found shall
not exceed any length of 1mm.

BS-6566 is a voluntary product standard, and
mills produce in accordance with these guidelines.

BS1088 is a strictly controlled standard that is
certified by Lloyds of London (Certificate
#03/00079) for applications of marine, offshore,
industrial and general use where a WBP grade
marine plywood is specified. Certificate on file.
