China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of wood-based panels, and its export trade is also gradually increasing. With the rapid development of wood-based panels and their products (such as wood flooring, wallboard, staircase and doors and windows), a more perfect development system of wood-based panels industry has gradually formed from resource cultivation, processing and utilization to export trade. Wood-based panel industry has become a vigorous industry in China’s forestry industry.
At present, China’s wood-based panel industry is not only large-scale but also diverse, widely used in construction (structural laminates, structural veneer laminates, structural plywood, directional particleboard and concrete formwork plywood, etc.), furniture (all kinds of veneered wood-based panels, interior decoration (floors, wallboards, stairs, doors and windows, etc.), packaging (industry, transportation and food, etc.). Transportation (aircraft, vehicles, ships, containers and industrial pallets), sports venues (such as sports, stage, etc.), besides the traditional wood-based panel products – plywood, particleboard, fiberboard, etc., all kinds of veneered wood-based panels, all kinds of wood flooring and many kinds of composite wood-based panels have also emerged as the times require. From non-structural sheet metal to structural sheet metal, which can be used for load-bearing, its field is also increasing.
(1) Expansion of Standard Types and Improvement of Standard Level
With the deepening of reform and opening up and the gradual prosperity of economic development, our government attaches more importance to standardization and management. When formulating standards, we should not only actively adopt international (or advanced foreign) standards, but also attach importance to our own innovative intellectual property technology. New products of wood-based panels have been produced and standard fields have been expanded. For example, plywood specialty: besides the national standards of plywood, standards of blockboard, Shaped plywood and veneer laminated wood have been formulated, as well as plywood standards for concrete formwork, packing box, aviation, tea packaging, electrical engineering, railway passenger cars and rackets. Fiberboard specialty: According to the main production process: dry fiberboard and wet fiberboard, the revised national standard of “medium density fiberboard” (2009) is to revise the draft final standard of ISO “dry process fiberboard”. With the development of production and market requirements, the standard of “hard fiberboard” has been revised three times and revised to “wet process fiberboard” according to ISO “wet process fiberboard” standard. Hard fiberboard. It is also related to the thin, relief, corrugated and other wet fiberboard industry standards. Particleboard specialty: The recent revision of the national standard of Particleboard is to revise the relevant standard of Particleboard adopted by ISO. In order to meet the needs of the construction and building materials market, there are also particleboard standards such as orientation, moulding, gypsum, extruding hollow core, etc. Veneer materials and veneer wood-based panels: such as “impregnated paper veneer wood-based panels”, “decorative veneer veneer wood-based panels”, “thermosetting resin impregnated paper high pressure decorative laminated panels”, “direct printing wood-based panels” and so on. In terms of veneered wood-based panels, there are also standards of “planed veneer”, “rotary veneer”, “wet adhesive tape for veneer” and “reconstituted decorative veneer” which are compatible with the main products. In order to adapt to the prosperity of the market and the development of housing decoration and decoration industry, a large number of standards for wood floors, wallboards, staircases and doors have been formulated in recent years, such as Solid Wood Composite Floors, Impregnated Paper Laminated Wood Floors, Wood Floors for Gymnasium, Wood Floors for Ground Heating, Flame Retardant Wood Composite Floors, Wood Plastic Floors and Decorated Wood Wallboard. And “Wooden Stairs for Residential Buildings” and so on.
(2) Establishment of limit standards for toxic and harmful substances in wood-based panels
With the international community’s attention to environmental and human living safety issues, China’s wood-based panels standards have also done a lot of work on the limits of toxic and harmful substances (formaldehyde emission in wood-based panels, volatile organic compounds (VOC) and heavy metals and other harmful substances) and detection methods, and at the historic moment, some corresponding instruments and equipment development and standard development have emerged. Among them, the mandatory standard “Formaldehyde Release Limits in Wood-based Panels and Their Products for Interior Decoration and Decoration Material” (GB 18580) was issued and implemented in 2001, which played a very important role in protecting our environment, protecting consumers’human health, guiding production and standardizing the market. In 2010, the revision of GB 18580 was completed.
(3) Establishment of structural (load-bearing) wood-based panel standards
The application of wood-based panels in the field of building materials in China is constantly developing. It is very important to formulate the product standard of wood-based panels for bearing (structure) safety issues. When formulating the standard, China tries to adopt the relevant international standards and the standards of foreign advanced countries, such as “structural laminates”, “oriented particleboard”, “structural wood-bamboo composite wood-based panels” and “structural wood-bamboo composite wood-based panels”. “Wood structure plywood” and so on.
(4) Applicability and timeliness of wood-based panel standards
In recent years, according to the requirements of the National Standards Committee, most of the important standards for wood-based panels have been actively adopted by international and foreign advanced countries and regions, and revised according to the advanced productivity level of our industry. However, although China is a big country in wood-based panel production, there is still a gap between China and a strong country. Some products are mainly products with poor stability and uniformity, so although most of the standards are considered to be in line with foreign standards, some standards also need to consider national conditions, of course, the principle of not accommodating backwardness.
