Shape of particles has a great influence on the strength of sheets. The surface of high-quality particles is smooth, uniform in size, complete in fibre, with high flexural strength and the maximum strength of the board; the particles made from broken veneer have large thickness and poor plasticity, and the contact between particles is not close enough, so the board made from it has lower strength; the particles in factories are uneven in thickness and a large number of fibers. The dimension is cut off, the sizing is uneven, the quality of the slab is not high, and the strength of the board made of this kind of particles is lower; the fiber of sawdust is very short, and the strength of the board made of sawdust is the lowest. Under the same technological conditions, high strength and dimensional stability can be obtained by using thin and narrow particles with smooth surface, uniform thickness.

The thinner the plate, the stronger the strength. However, everything has duality, too long particles are easy to curl, sizing is not uniform, transportation and paving are difficult. Excessive thinning of particles will greatly increase its specific surface area. Under certain sizing amount, the amount of glue on the unit area of particles will be significantly reduced, thus forming a glue-deficient surface; moreover, too thin particles have low strength and are easy to break.

The shape of too narrow particles is not ideal and the quality of the slab is poor. Therefore, the size of particles should be controlled within a certain limit. Practice has proved that the length and thickness of particles have the greatest impact on the quality of the board, and there must be a certain proportion between them. This is the ratio of length to thickness of particles. The formula is as follows:

In the formula: the aspect ratio of S-shavings:

L – Particle length (mm);

D – Particle thickness (mm).

It can be seen from the formula that the bigger the aspect ratio of shavings is, the thinner and longer the shavings are.
