Intergrown knot has its annual rings intergrown with the surrounding wood through at least 3/4 of the knot cross-section perimeter.

Sound knot is a knot with rot-free wood.

Light sound knot is a sound knot of a similar color as the surrounding wood.

Dark sound knot is a sound knot of a considerably darker color than the surrounding wood, richly permeated with gum, tannin and heartwood agents, often mottled.

The average of the minimum and the maximum diameters is taken as the knot (hole) diameter.
