Thickness Deviation of MDF Affects Surface Quality

Medium density board is one of the main raw materials in panel furniture production. Decoration or veneering is an important process in furniture production. The thickness deviation has an important influence on the quality of furniture, as well as on the production process.

National standard: the thickness deviation of sheet should be within (+0.2mm). Many furniture factories do not consider whether the qualified sheet meets the quality requirements of veneer technology, but directly apply it to the veneer, resulting in a large number of quality problems, resulting in unnecessary rework and even waste product

So what effect does the thickness deviation of MDF have on the quality of veneer?

  1. When making furniture with medium density board, the surface needs to be decorated. The decorative materials are usually wood skin or melamine paper. These veneers are relatively thin and require high smoothness on the surface of the base material. Because the veneer material is thin, when the surface of the base material is uneven, the surface of the workpiece may be uneven, resulting in waste products and inferior products.
  2. When using veneer, the thickness of veneer is between 0.4 mm and 0.65 mm. Furniture with veneer usually needs to be painted. The surface should be sanded before painting. If the thickness deviation of the base material is large, about 0.4 mm, the phenomenon of sanding through the veneer is likely to occur after several sanding, resulting in serious quality defects. Usually the thickness of veneer material is about 0.4 mm, and the deviation of boards thickness can not exceed 1/3 of the thickness of veneer material. After sanding, the thickness of the base material varies between 0.1 mm, less than 1/3 of the thickness of the veneer material, which meets the technical requirements of the veneer material for the base material.
  3. In addition, the thickness deviation of the base material is also required. In gluing process, roll coating machine is used to determine the gap between rollers according to the thickness of the sheet before gluing, so as to ensure the uniformity of gluing and the gluing amount on the surface of the sheet. In the process of processing the same nominal size boards, only adjust the cot positioning once, will not repeatedly adjust the equipment in the production process. If there is too large thickness deviation of the sheet, it will cause local glue shortage or glue overload on the surface of the sheet.
