Veneer quality control Part 7:Study on Continuous Hot Pressure Drying of Poplar Veneer

Poplar veneer was dried by continuous hot pressing at high temperature (170 C) using heat conducting oil as heat carrier. The final moisture content of 3 mm thick veneer can be dried to 5.1% within 4 minutes. Dry veneer is flat, smooth, evenly moisture content, no tear. The average drying shrinkage rate of veneer thickness is 6.8%, which is higher than 3.3% of convection drying veneer conveyed by mesh belt, and the transverse grain shrinkage rate is 4.8%, which is lower than 7.9% of convection drying veneer. The results show that this method is feasible for drying fast-growing poplar veneers, and the laminated veneer lumber (LVL) pressed with this thick veneer has come to Japan.
