Wood Mouldings Inspection Checklist
Document Purpose: This checklist establishes standardized inspection criteria for raw and prefinished wood mouldings prior to installation, covering material specification, dimensional accuracy, surface quality, finish performance, structural integrity, and installation compliance. It aligns with industry milling standards, ASTM adhesive specifications, and residential & commercial interior trim requirements to ensure consistent quality, durability, and aesthetic uniformity of all moulding products.

Inspection Standard: Wood Moulding Association (WM) industry standards, ASTM D3110-72 adhesive performance specifications, and professional millwork finishing guidelines
1. General Material & Specification Verification
Verify all moulding products match project specifications, grade classification, and structural type before cutting and installation.
- Moulding Type & Grade: Confirm product category (primed, prefinished, Finished Elegance® solid finish) and wood grade comply with requirements. N-Grade products feature single-piece clear exposed faces for natural finishes; P-Grade products allow finger-jointed or edge-glued construction for opaque painted finishes.
- Construction Type: Distinguish solid moulding (non-finger-jointed) vs finger-jointed pine moulding; confirm structural design matches project demands, with no unauthorized joint defects on visible surfaces.
- Product Series & Profile: Verify moulding profile (ogee, ovolo, cove, half round, bullnose, chamfer strip) and series number are consistent with design drawings, no profile deformation or dimensional deviation.
- Length Specification: Check if products are supplied in specified lengths (7ft/8ft/14ft/16ft) or random lengths; confirm short pieces (under 6ft) do not exceed project allowance and meet usage requirements.
2. Dimensional Accuracy Inspection
All dimensions must comply with ceiling height matching standards and millwork dimensional tolerances to ensure seamless installation and proportional aesthetics.

- Dimensional Tolerance: All width, thickness, and length deviations shall not exceed ±1/32”; face measure excludes rabbets and mould profiles, consistent with industry definitions.
- Structural Machining: Check plow grooves, rabbets, and sprung mould beveling are accurately machined; sprung mouldings feature properly beveled interior corners for tight 90° angle fitting.
- Backed Out/Hollow Back: Irregular surface adaptation grooves are clean and uniform, ensuring full contact with wall/ceiling surfaces without gaps.
3. Wood Surface & Defect Inspection
Inspect raw and primed moulding surfaces for natural wood defects, processing flaws, and surface uniformity to guarantee finishing quality.
- Knot Classification Compliance: Verify knot size and condition meet grade standards: pin knots (≤1/2”), small knots (≤3/4”), medium knots (≤1-1/2”), large knots (>1-1/2”). Only sound, tight knots are acceptable on exposed surfaces; loose/decayed knots are strictly prohibited.
- Pitch & Stain Control: Light pitch is permitted for all grades; medium/heavy pitch is only allowed for P-Grade painted finishes. Blue stain and mold-induced discoloration are not acceptable for finished exposed surfaces.
- Warpage & Deformation: Inspect for bow, crook, cup, and twist warpage; all deformation shall be within WM standard allowable limits, no visible bending or twisting affecting installation flatness.
- Edge Quality: Edges feature eased rounding to prevent splintering; bullnose and rounded edge profiles are smooth and uniform, no burrs, cracks, or chipping.
- Surface Smoothness: S4S surfaced mouldings have uniform smooth sawn surfaces; no tool marks, scratches, dents, or uneven machining traces.
- Wane Defect: No excessive bark or wood missing on edges/corners beyond standard eased edge allowances.
4. Finish & Coating Inspection
Inspect factory pre-finish, prime coat, and field finish compatibility, covering paint/stain uniformity, topcoat performance, and coating integrity.
4.1 Prime & Prefinished Moulding Check
- Primed mouldings have full, uniform white primer coverage, completely covering wood imperfections with no bare spots or uneven coating.
- Prefinished mouldings (grain-printed, toned, vinyl-wrapped) have consistent color and wood grain simulation; no fading, peeling, or pattern distortion.
- Finished Elegance® products feature full four-sided Eastman Cerfis™ coating, no uncoated areas, with superior surface durability and no pre-installation finishing required.
4.2 Topcoat Material & Performance Verification
- Oil-Based Topcoat: High durability, slight yellowing effect on unstained wood; uniform coating, no bubbling, cracking, or uneven film formation.
- Water-Based Topcoat: Fast-drying, low odor, dust-resistant finish; no yellowing on raw wood, clean and flat coating surface with easy cleanup performance.
- Polyurethane/Varnish Coating: Polyurethane finishes form tough plastic-like protective layers; no clouding caused by over-application. Varnish resin coverage is complete, with no solvent residue or uneven curing.
4.3 Field Finishing Compliance (Post-Installation)
- Nail holes and surface damages are fully repaired with non-shrinking filler; filler is completely dry and lightly sanded with 120-grit sandpaper for optimal coating adhesion.
- Seams are fully caulked with 30° angled nozzle application, constant pressure construction, no gaps or uneven caulking lines.
- Paint/stain application uses qualified 2–2.5 inch nylon/poly-nylon brushes (or foam rollers for polyurethane); no bristle shedding, stain pooling, or brush marks.
- Multi-coat finishing strictly follows full inter-coat drying time based on ambient temperature and humidity; no wet-on-wet application defects.
5. Adhesive & Joint Performance Inspection
Inspect factory joint processing and on-site bonding quality per ASTM D3110-72 adhesive performance standards.
5.1 Adhesive Grade Verification
- Dry-Use Adhesive: Suitable for indoor conventional environments; stable bonding under EMC ≤16% and intermittent high temperature (74°C/6h) conditions.
- Wet-Use Adhesive: Applied to humid or high-moisture areas; maintains structural stability under EMC ≥16% and long-term high-temperature (60°C) service conditions.
5.2 Joint Quality Check
- Finger Joints: Interlocking fingers are tightly fitted, glue coverage is full, no gaps, cracks, or misalignment; joint dimensional stability matches solid wood standards.
- Miter Joints: 45° miter cuts are accurate with tight seam fitting; no gaps or misalignment at 90° wall/ceiling corners.
- Coped Joints: Coping cutting perfectly fits adjacent moulding profiles, seamless splicing at corner connections.
- Return Joints: Custom triangular return pieces are accurately cut (one angled end, one 90° end), firmly bonded with wood glue, no loose or warped returns.
6. Installation Compliance Inspection
Verify on-site installation process and finished effect comply with standard moulding installation procedures.
- Measurement & Cutting: Wall dimension measurement deducts door/window openings; 15% waste margin is reserved for miter cuts. Moulding cutting dimensions include profile width compensation for precise miter joint fitting.
- Fixing Construction: Finishing nails/ brad nailers are used for fixing; corner nails are installed uniformly after full moulding layout, no premature corner fixing causing deformation.
- Overall Aesthetics: All moulding lines are horizontal/vertical and flat; consistent spacing, no uneven seams, protruding nails, or damaged surfaces.
- Protective Structure Installation: Base shoe fully covers gaps between base mould and floor; corner guards effectively protect wall corners with neat coverage of uneven joints.
