AMERICAN-STYLE KITCHEN CABINET INSPECTION CHECKLIST

U.S. Market Quality Control Standard · Factory Inspection · Pre-Shipment Inspection · Laboratory Testing

This inspection checklist is designed for American-style kitchen cabinets manufactured for the U.S. market, including face-frame cabinetry, frameless cabinetry, Shaker-style doors, raised-panel doors, slab doors, painted cabinets, stained wood cabinets, and thermofoil or laminate-finished cabinets.

It uses professional U.S. cabinetry terminology and separates visual appearance, dimensions, construction, materials, hardware, installation, functional performance, packaging, and laboratory testing.

The checklist is suitable for factory quality control (QC), third-party inspection (TPI), supplier audits, and pre-shipment inspection (PSI). Acceptance criteria should be confirmed against the approved shop drawings, purchase order, approved production sample, cabinet construction type, and applicable U.S. standards.

Appearance Acceptance Rule: Any allowable natural wood variation, color difference, minor finish imperfection, or cosmetic defect must be evaluated against the approved sample, written defect limits, and buyer-approved acceptance standard. Do not apply an invented universal tolerance.

3. Dimensions and dimensional tolerances

American kitchen cabinets are commonly specified in inches. Metric measurements may be recorded additionally for international factory production.

Important: There is no single universal cabinet size or dimensional tolerance that applies to every American kitchen cabinet. The approved shop drawings, order-specific dimensions, installation requirements, and written tolerances control acceptance.

8. Performance and laboratory testing requirements

The principal U.S. industry benchmark for kitchen-cabinet performance is ANSI/KCMA A161.1-2022, Performance and Construction Standard for Kitchen and Vanity Cabinets. It is a voluntary performance standard, not a universal rule requiring every cabinet sold in the United States to be KCMA-certified. Its testing covers structural integrity, doors, drawers, and finish durability.

Important testing rule: The precise test setup, load, duration, number of cycles, conditioning, specimen preparation, and pass/fail criteria must come from the applicable standard or approved test protocol. This table is a test-planning and report-tracking checklist, not a replacement for the copyrighted standard or a laboratory’s controlled procedure.

Laboratory and compliance notes

  • Structural durability: Request a complete ANSI/KCMA A161.1 report when the buyer requires evidence of cabinet performance or KCMA certification. The standard’s prescribed tests include loaded shelves and bottoms, wall-cabinet mounting, door and drawer endurance, and finish resistance. KCMA+1
  • Formaldehyde emissions: U.S. federal TSCA Title VI requirements cover regulated hardwood plywood, MDF, and particleboard used in applicable finished goods. The required compliance documentation depends on the regulated panel material, supply chain role, and product configuration. US EPA+1
  • California sales: Confirm California Air Resources Board (CARB) requirements alongside federal requirements where the product is supplied into California. Do not treat a generic supplier declaration as a substitute for the required supporting compliance records. California Air Resources Board+1
  • Finish and hardware tests: Coating adhesion, film thickness, scratch resistance, edge-banding bond strength, and hardware corrosion tests should use an agreed method appropriate to the actual material and coating system. Do not claim these tests are all mandatory KCMA certification tests.
  • Other safety requirements: Glass, electrical components, lighting, charging outlets, and specialized accessories may trigger additional requirements based on their design and intended use.

12. Recommended quality-control procedure

  1. Before production: Approve shop drawings, the bill of materials, door style, finish sample, hardware specifications, and dimensional tolerances.
  2. During production: Inspect incoming panels, machining, cabinet assembly, edge banding, finishing, hardware installation, and in-process dimensions.
  3. Before shipment: Inspect appearance, dimensions, internal construction, door and drawer operation, accessories, carton marking, and packaging using the approved sampling plan.
  4. For performance claims: Obtain applicable laboratory reports and verify whether the exact cabinet construction and product configuration are covered by the report or certification.
  5. For U.S. compliance: Verify the applicable TSCA Title VI and, where relevant, California requirements using supporting documentation from the regulated supply chain.
  6. For release: Record nonconformities, corrective actions, test-report status, and final acceptance authorization.

Professional recommendation: For an export factory supplying American kitchen cabinets, use this checklist together with a buyer-approved dimensional specification, finish-defect reference sheet, cabinet hardware BOM, and ANSI/KCMA A161.1 performance-testing plan. This is more reliable than using appearance inspection alone, and it avoids incorrectly representing a voluntary certification or a buyer-specific tolerance as a universal U.S. legal requirement.
