Do not automatically apply tolerances intended for solid hardwood flooring to engineered flooring. The product construction, nominal dimensions, machining system and manufacturer’s specification determine the appropriate acceptance criteria.

4.18Construction traceabilityCore batch and adhesive system traceable to production records

Recommended destructive inspection: Cut representative cross-sections from designated sample planks to document the wear layer, adhesive interface, plywood plies and backing layer. Use suitable bond testing where the specification requires it.

A visually clean cross-section alone does not establish bond strength or long-term durability.

5. Moisture content and dimensional stability

Acceptance note: Set the moisture-content target according to the species, manufacturing process, product construction, intended U.S. distribution region and installation instructions. Do not impose one universal moisture-content limit on every species and flooring construction.

6.12Process control recordsPress temperature, pressure, duration and cure records available as applicable

The test method and acceptance threshold should be specified for the actual engineered flooring assembly. A plywood panel bond test may be useful for the substrate but does not automatically establish the bond performance of the complete finished flooring product.

9.1 Formaldehyde compliance — critical U.S. requirement

For engineered flooring with a plywood core, the compliance assessment must consider the actual plywood construction and the regulatory classification of the finished product. The U.S. EPA’s TSCA Title VI rules cover regulated hardwood plywood, MDF and particleboard, and can also apply to certain laminated products and finished goods containing regulated composite wood products. Applicability should be confirmed for the specific construction and manufacturing arrangement.

Plywood core production date / lot
Applicable EPA-recognized Third-Party Certifier (TPC)

Important: Do not assume that a plywood-core flooring product is compliant merely because the plywood supplier provides a generic test report. The responsible parties, product classification, labeling, testing and recordkeeping requirements must be checked against the applicable rule.
