Thisis the beauty of working with hardwood veneer – that two logs of the same species, cut in different ways, produce distinctive, individual veneers!Six principal methods of cutting veneer are used: rotary, quarter slicing, plain slicing, rift-cut, half-round slicing and lengthwise slicing.Figure Characteristics of VeneersThe figure of the face veneer is of the utmost importance to the designer and architect, because the whole character of the completedinstallation may be determined by the choice of veneer to be used. When discussing figure in wood, those who deal with veneer usuallydescribe the characteristics of the “movement” in the wood – whether it has wide or narrow heart, cathedral, crossfire, or is highly figured.Some of the more commonly used veneers are illustrated below.Types of Veneer CutsDecorative Hardwoods AssociationRotaryRotary veneer is produced bycentering the log in a lathe andturning it against a broad cuttingknife which is set into the log at aslight angle. Rotary cut veneer can besufficiently wide to provide full sheet(one piece) faces.Rift-CutRift-cut veneer is produced fromthe various species of oak. Oak hasmedullary ray cells which radiatefrom the center of the log like thecurved spokes of a wheel. This straightgrain cut is at a slight angle to themedullary rays to minimize rayfleck (flake).Quarter SlicingQuarter sliced veneer achieves astraight grain appearance by slicingapproximately perpendicular to theannual growth rings.Half-Round SlicingHalf-round slicing is cutting on anarch roughly parallel to the center ofthe log to achieve flat-cut veneer. Thecathedrals can have more roundedtops since the grain is formed by theinner most growth rings as the veneeris cut through the flitch.Plain SlicingPlain sliced veneer is veneer slicedparallel to the center of the log toachieve flat-cut veneer. The cathedralsare formed by the inner most growthrings as the veneer is cut throughthe flitch.Lengthwise SlicingA board of flat sawn lumber is passedflat over a stationary knife. As itpasses, a sheet of veneer is slicedfrom the bottom of the board.
