Abimci (Brazilian Association for Mechanically Processed Timber)

Abimci (Brazilian Association for Mechanically Processed Timber) is an association which, at the time of its foundation, was compounded by companies linked to the industry of plywood, and has increased its members throughout the years and currently integrates several segments of the mechanically processed timber industry.

The association’s history has been characterized by very distinct progress and development phases since its foundation,  amendment of its statute change in the headquarter’s address, and other relevant events.

Abimci’s first phase was determined by the company’s consolidation and covers the period between the moment of its foundation, on July 18th, 1972, in the capital of the state of São Paulo, and the beginning of the 90’s. In such period, the company’s corporate name was ABIMCE (Brazilian Association of Special Plywood Industry) and it was primarily engaged in defending the interests of companies manufacturing plywood.

As of 1992, a new cycle begins for ABIMCE with the introduction of other segments into the association.

In order to keep up with the growth of the sector and thus be able to represent the other segments of the wood industry in Brazil, the association has changed its corporate name to Abimci (Brazilian Association for Processed and Industrialized Timber), which besides integrating the plywood industry, also included among its members companies related to the manufacture of other products, such as sawnwood, flooring, doors and so on.

Abimci has expanded the representation of its members to various government or private institutions, and also the interaction between different segments of the wood industry.

In 1998 the Abimci’s name changed to Brazilian Association for Mechanically Processed Timber.

Although the name was changed, the acronym remained the same. This new change was carried out based on some important aspects:

  • Adequacy to new markets and products;
  • Supply of more subsides and information to the members for the growth of the sector in the global market;
  • Necessity to include new groups of members and expand the area of operation.

Such expansion of the association’s operation and members occurred particularly along with the segment of solid wood products and its partners, with a significant growth.

By then, Abimci’s operation had gotten more focused on the defense of members’ interests, specially in the governmental sphere, alongside the company’s commercial increment of its members. Through a reinforced internal structure, the actions and rendering of services have also been strengthened with suppliers of inputs and capital goods for the wood industry, associations, universities, press, public opinion, market and other audiences.

Another important phase of the association’s history took place in 2000, especially regard to the new Abimci`s headquarters. Abimci was originally settled in São Paulo and from this period on its headquarters moved to the city of Curitiba (PR), achieving a strategic geographical position within the forest-based sector and the optimization of its activities. This period also constitutes a landmark for the beginning of the company’s technical progress with the launch of quality and certification programs for products and processes, providing due access to the main world markets.

As a culmination of such stage, there was a significant increase in membership, comprising several segments of industry and services, in almost all regions of the country.
