Covered in a hard-wearing UV-resistant melamine impregnated paper film that is chemically bonded under heat & pressure to a dimensionally-stable plywood core, melamine faced plywoods are tough, waterproof and scratch resistant. They are used extensively in the manufacture of furniture, kitchens & toys and installations such as shopfitting, exhibitions & displays, workshops & vehicle conversions.

The coating has good colour stability and chemical resistance. Many household detergents can therefore be used safely on the surface, thus making it very easy to keep clean.

Technical details (general)

  • Construction:
    • Exterior birch plywood faced with a hard-wearing, smooth melamine-impregnated film
  • Standard thickness:
    • 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 21mm, 24mm, 27mm, 30mm
      (plus surface coating)
  • Standard sizes:
    • 1200 / 1220 / 1250 x 2400 / 2440 / 2500mm
    • 1200 / 1220 x 3000 / 3050 / 3300 / 3660mm
    • 1500 / 1525 x 2400 / 2440 / 3000 / 3050 / 3660mm
  • Special sizes:
    • In principle, any size can be produced up to the maximum stated above
  • Surface coating:
    • Smooth white film that is resistant to UV light, abrasion and moisture, and highly resistant to most common chemicals and solvents.
NB: Because these panels are manufactured on the same production line as phenolic film faced plywoods very small brown spots and occasional scratches may sometimes be visible upon close inspection
  • Edge treatment:
    • Typically sealed with exterior acrylic paint to protect against moisture
  • Wear rating:
    • Taber abrasion value = typical 1400R (EN 438-2)
  • Tolerances:
    • Length/width:
      Typical: up to 1m @ ±1mm, up to 2m @ ±2mm , 2m & above @ ±3mm
    • Thickness (core plywood):
      Ranges from 4mm @ +0.3mm/-0.4mm to 50mm @ ±1.2mm
    • (Special tolerances by arrangement)
  • Bonding Quality:
    • EN 314-2 Class 3 – Exterior
    • E1 (EN 13986) Low formaldehyde
  • Hazard class:
    • EN 636-2 – Covered exterior & limited high moisture applications
    • EN 636-3 – Exterior & high moisture applications
  • Approximate weights of birch plywood core:
  • 6mm =4.4 kg/m²
  • 9mm =6.3 kg/m²
  • 12mm =8.2 kg/m²
  • 15mm =10.1 kg/m²
  • 18mm =12.0 kg/m²
