KCMA (ANSI/KCMA A161.1) Kitchen Cabinet Quality Checklist & Grading Rules
Standard: ANSI/KCMA A161.1 (North America’s primary cabinet performance standard)
Scope: Construction, material, finish, hardware, safety & grading for kitchen/bath cabinets
I. Basic Construction Requirements (Mandatory for Certification)
- Full enclosure: Wall cabinets (back/bottom/side/top); base cabinets (back/bottom/side)
- Toe space: Base cabinets ≥2” deep × 3” high
- Moisture content: All wood parts ≤10% MC at fabrication
- Structural rigidity: Corner/lineal bracing at critical joints
- Formaldehyde compliance: TSCA Title VI / CARB Phase 2 (low-emission composite wood)
- Exterior surfaces: Free of saw marks, splinters, sharp edges
II. Material Quality Checklist
1. Cabinet Box
- Panels: ≥½” thick (Economy); ≥¾” (Premium)
- Back panel: ≥¼” plywood, fully captured (not just stapled)
- Shelves: ≥¾” thick, adjustable (32mm system), load-rated
2. Face Frame (Framed Cabinets)
- Material: Solid hardwood or high-grade plywood
- Joinery: Cope-and-stick or dowel (no butt joints)
3. Doors
- Frame: Solid hardwood or plywood core
- Panel: Solid wood or veneered MDF (no warping)
- Gap tolerance: Uniform ±1.5mm all around
4. Drawers
- Box: Solid wood or plywood sides (≥½” thick)
- Joinery: Dovetail (4 corners, Premium); stapled (Economy)
- Bottom: ≥¼” plywood (not particleboard)
III. Performance Test Checklist (KCMA A161.1 Certified)
1. Structural Tests
- Wall cabinet load: 600 lbs internal load (no mounting failure)Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association
- Base front joint: 250 lbs (drawer rail) / 200 lbs (no rail) (no opening)
- Impact test: 3 lb steel ball drop from 6” (no crack, break)
2. Door & Drawer Cycling

- Drawer cycle: 25,000 open/close under load (no slide failure)Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association
- Alignment: Doors/drawers flush, parallel, no binding
3. Finish Tests
- Chemical resistance: 24hr exposure to coffee, vinegar, alcohol (no stain, peel)Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association
- Heat/humidity: 120°F / 70% RH for 48hr (no blister, warp)Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association
- Finish adhesion: No peeling, flaking, or delaminationKitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association
IV. Hardware & Functionality
- Hinges: BHMA A156.9 rated, 6-way adjustable, soft-close (Premium)
- Drawer glides: Full-extension, soft-close, load-rated (75–100 lbs)
- Closure: Doors/drawers close smoothly, no slamming
V. KCMA Official Grading Rules

- Passes all A161.1 construction & performance tests
- No structural defects; finish/hardware flawless
- Within all dimensional tolerances (±1.5mm gaps, ±2mm overall)
- TSCA Title VI compliant; ESP (Environmental Stewardship Program) optional
Grade B – Seconds (Limited Warranty, Outlet Only)
- Minor finish blemishes (small scratches, faint discoloration; non-through)
- Slight dimensional variance (±3mm; no functional impact)
- No structural issues; hardware fully functional
- Not KCMA certified; sold “as-is” with limited/returnless warranty
Grade C – Reject (Unsellable, Scrapped)
- Structural damage (warp, crack, broken joinery)
- Major finish failure (peeling, deep scratches, permanent stains)
- Hardware malfunction (hinge/glide failure, misalignment)
- Fails KCMA performance tests (load, cycle, finish)Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association
