According to the Russian Furniture and Woodworking Industry Association, in 2022, the output of particleboard and OSB in Russia fell by 10.5% to 10.3 million cubic meters, and the output of fiberboard and MDF fell by 12.1% to 649 million cubic meters. Plywood production decreased by 28.8% to 3.24 million cubic meters. The decline in wood-based panel production was due to the European sanctions, the closure of major export destinations and the decline in domestic market demand.

With exports and prices plummeting, plywood manufacturers have been hit hardest. “In November 2022, the output of Russian plywood plants reached the lowest level in ten years, and reduced to the level in 2010,” said Timur Irmuganov, director of the Russian Furniture and Woodworking Industry Association. If the current situation continues, the output of wood-based panels will continue to decline this year. In 2023, the output of particleboard in Russia will fall by 8%, while the output of fiberboard and plywood will fall by another 14%. This will bring the industry back to the level of 2006, that is, 15 years ago.
